Cupboard under the stairs in London costs 500 pound a month...plus bills!
Ms Alex Lomax, a 23 year old graduate, was left outraged after viewing a flat in London advertised on london2let.com as “furnished” turned out to be a “bed under the stairs”.
The cramped cupboard located in a property in Clapham is being offered at a shocking £500 a month and has since been compared to Harry Potter’s “cupboard under the stairs”.
Aspiring journalist, Ms Lomax, expressed her outrage on twitter after travelling from Nottingham all the way to London to be shown nothing more than a mattress for a single bed on the floor with storage boxes still stacked up behind the pillow and the other tenants coats still hung up inside.
Ms Lomax told of her reaction saying “I was obviously shocked but was all too polite, I think. I wish I’d been more angry because it’s clearly ridiculous and I’m annoyed at myself for basically just making my excuses.”
She also spoke of how the person showing her the room “didn’t apologise” for the state it was in, and told her “it was the last room to rent in the place”.
The online advertisement is searching for a “friendly, open-minded and outgoing person” to join the flatshare. It also adds “We’re a good bunch and like to chill out a lot together - not really looking for somebody that just wants to stay in their room. Room comes with a bed.”
The shocking £500 a month rent for the tiny cupboard also does not include the extra £60 a month required for bills.
The director of the website SpareRoom.co.uk, Matt Hutchinson believes that this shows the increasing pressure on housing market in London saying "Average room rents in Clapham Junction are now £784 per month, so you can see why someone would be tempted by a £500 bargain, but this ad certainly isn't offering a room. We've seen mattresses in kitchens, mattresses in sheds, in living rooms, and now we're seeing mattresses under the stairs. I dread to think what's next."
