Regeneration Masterplan to Target Deprived Wigan Council Estate

Landscape architect and masterplanner Gillespies has presented a regeneration masterplan for the Worsley Mesnes estate in Wigan, which is set for a multi-million pound transformation, one of the biggest overhauls in the area since the 1980’s.

The proposal includes 278 new homes, remodeling of the 1960’s streets, improved greenspace and a hub development which will comprise of shops, community space, a neighbourhood square, and 18.5 acres of improved green space.

The area is one of the most deprived in the North West, with twice the national average of people with bad or very bad health, and higher than average crime and unemployment problems.

The aim is to deliver long-term improvements to the area, with Wigan Council keen to access funding from central government, following an announcement in December 2016 that up to £172m is available to regenerate deprived estates across the UK.  Wigan Council is keen to hear the views of the local residents and organisations within the community to ensure they get the regeneration of the estate right.

The masterplan will be delivered in phases over the next 10 years, and can be viewed at http://housing.wigan.gov.uk/Docs/About-us/Consultations/Worsley-Mesnes/Worsley-Mesnes-estate-masterplan.pdf
